BS 8418 Is The Standard That Matters

BS 8418 is the UK British Standard covering the design, installation, commissioning and operation of detector-activated remotely-monitored CCTV. A tower operated to BS 8418 has verified detection zones, alarm-verified activations, ARC monitoring by an accredited operator, documented incident handling, and the audit trail insurers and police forces expect. Most UK insurers and many contractor security schedules now specifically require BS 8418-compliant remote monitoring — not just "CCTV". Ask your provider whether their towers are operated to the standard. If the answer is anything but yes, keep looking.

What Separates A Good Tower From A Bad One

Two towers of similar height and camera count can deliver wildly different results on the same site. The differences are in the pieces of the specification that buyers most often skim.

Live monitoring vs recording only

The single biggest split in the market. A tower that records to an SD card and is only reviewed after an incident is a very different product to one that streams live to a monitored ARC where a trained operator responds in real time. Older towers relied on basic PIR or pixel-based motion detection — resulting in dozens or hundreds of false alarms per week from wildlife, weather and moving branches.
